Classic Stuffed Peppers

These classic stuffed peppers are filled with a seasoned ground beef mixture and baked in a tangy tomato sauce until tender. Halved green bell peppers make generous portions and let the sauce coat the filling as it bakes.

1 | teaspoon prepared mustard |
1 | teaspoon worcestershire sauce |
1⁄4 | teaspoon dried oregano |
1⁄4 | teaspoon dried basil |
1⁄4 | teaspoon garlic powder |
1⁄4 | teaspoon dried parsley |
1⁄4 | teaspoon salt |
1⁄4 | teaspoon black pepper, ground |
Instructions
| 1. | Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly grease a large baking dish. |
|---|---|
| 2. | Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, add the pepper halves, and blanch for 5 minutes. |
| 3. | Drain the peppers well and arrange them cut side up in the prepared baking dish. |
| 4. | Mix the ground beef, onion, garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, parmesan, salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes if using, oregano, and parsley just until evenly combined. |
| 5. | Divide the beef mixture among the pepper halves, packing it gently without compressing it too tightly. |
| 6. | Stir together the tomato sauce, water, brown sugar, vinegar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, oregano, basil, garlic powder, parsley, salt, and black pepper. |
| 7. | Spoon a little sauce into the bottom of the baking dish, then pour the remaining sauce evenly over the stuffed peppers. |
| 8. | Cover the dish with foil and bake for 40 minutes. |
| 9. | Uncover and bake for 10 to 20 minutes more, until the peppers are tender and the beef filling is cooked through. |
| 10. | Let the stuffed peppers rest for 5 minutes, then serve with the pan sauce spooned over the top. |
