For the coffee cake

1 cup butter or margarine, softened
2 ¾ cups sugar, divided
2 teaspoons vanilla
4 eggs
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
16 ounces sour cream (2 cups)
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
½ cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

  • For the coffee cake

    1. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and 2 cups of sugar together until fluffy.
    2. Add the vanilla extract; then add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
    3. Combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; add them alternately with sour cream, beating just enough after each addition to keep the batter smooth.
    4. Spoon one-third of the batter into a greased 10-inch tube pan.
    5. Combine the ground cinnamon, chopped walnuts, and the remaining sugar; sprinkle one-third over the batter in the pan.
    6. Repeat the layers two more times.
    7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 70 minutes or until the cake tests done.
    8. Allow the cake to cool for 10 minutes; then remove it from the pan and transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
