¾ cup butter
2 ounces unsweetened chocolate
2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
2 cups granulated sugar
¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 ¾ cups buttermilk
2 large eggs, at room temperature

¾ cup whipping cream
1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Preparation of Cake Batter

    1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and generously grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans.
    2. In a small saucepan, melt the butter and unsweetened chocolate together over low heat, stirring gently.
    3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
    4. Pour in the melted chocolate mixture, buttermilk, and room temperature eggs.
    5. Mix on low speed until well combined, then increase to high speed and beat for about 2 minutes until the batter is light and fluffy.
    6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
    7. Bake for approximately 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
    8. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 5 minutes, then carefully invert them onto wire racks to cool completely.
  • Frosting Preparation and Assembly

    1. For the frosting, heat the whipping cream in a saucepan just until it begins to boil.
    2. Remove the cream from the heat and stir in the chocolate chips until the mixture is smooth and starts to thicken.
    3. Spread a third of the frosting on the bottom layer of the cake.
