1 | cup sugar |
1⁄2 | cup buttermilk |

1⁄2 | teaspoon baking soda |

Instructions
-
- Begin by preparing the bread. Cut the crust off the loaf of bread and then cut it into small cubes. (Note: You may choose to keep the crust on for added texture).
- Spread half of the cubed bread at the bottom of a greased 9x13 baking pan.
- Evenly distribute half of the cream cheese over the layer of bread.
- Repeat the layering process with the remaining bread and cream cheese.
- In a separate bowl, combine the eggs, half-and-half, maple syrup, melted butter, brown sugar, and vanilla.
- Carefully pour the egg mixture over the layers of bread and cream cheese in the pan.
- Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 40-50 minutes, until the casserole is golden brown and set.
- To prepare the sauce:
- Use a large saucepan to accommodate the mixture as it expands during cooking.
- Over medium heat, combine butter, sugar, buttermilk, light Karo syrup, and baking soda in the saucepan. Stir continuously until the mixture comes to a gentle boil.
- Allow the mixture to boil for 5 minutes, still stirring constantly.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the almond flavoring.
- When ready to serve:
- Spoon the bread casserole onto plates, generously drizzle the warm sauce over the casserole, and garnish with whipped cream, sliced strawberries, and bananas.
