- In a small bowl or cup, dissolve the yeast in the warm water. Allow it to sit for a few minutes.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, powdered sugar, and salt. Add the water with yeast and vegetable oil. Mix with a spoon and then knead the dough into a ball using your hands. Knead the dough for 5 minutes on a lightly floured surface until smooth. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes or until doubled in size.
- Once the dough has risen, preheat the oven to 425°F.
- Prepare a bath for the pretzels by mixing the baking soda with warm water until mostly dissolved.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion on a flat non-floured surface until it is approximately 3 feet long. Shape the pretzels and place them on a baking sheet prepared with non-stick spray. Optional: sprinkle pretzels with kosher salt or pretzel salt before baking.
- Bake the pretzels for 8-9 minutes until they turn golden brown. Rotate the pan halfway through baking for even cooking.
- Allow the pretzels to cool for a couple of minutes. For a savory option, brush them with melted butter before serving.
- For a sweet cinnamon sugar coating, combine granulated sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Brush the unsalted pretzels with melted butter and coat with the cinnamon sugar mixture.
