1 3⁄4 | buttermilk |

1 | tablespoon vegetable shortening |

- Preheat the oven to 475 degrees F.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the white cornmeal, all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix well.
- In another bowl, combine the buttermilk and egg. Beat until well blended, then add it to the dry ingredients. Mix the batter until thoroughly blended.
- Place the vegetable shortening and bacon grease in a 9" iron skillet. Heat until the shortening melts.
- Pour the hot fats into the batter, stir well, and pour the batter back into the skillet.
- Bake in the preheated oven until the cornbread is golden brown, about 20 minutes.
- To serve, turn the skillet upside down onto a large plate. Remove the skillet and cut the cornbread into wedges.
- To prepare for Cornbread dressing, cool the cornbread, cut it into wedges, and freeze until ready to use in the recipe. Defrost before continuing.
