Ingredients

1 cup white sugar
½ cup unsalted butter, melted
1 large egg
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon baking soda
1 cup peeled, cored, and diced tart apples (such as Granny Smith)
1 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

    1. Start by preheating the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour an 8-inch square baking pan.
    2. In a large bowl, combine the sugar, melted butter, and egg. Add the flour, cinnamon, and baking soda, then fold in the diced apples and walnuts. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan.
    3. Bake in the preheated oven for about 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the bars to cool completely before cutting them into nine equal portions.
