Caramel German Chocolate Bars

Image for recipe: Caramel German Chocolate Bars
Ready in: 40 mins
Serves: 20 servings

These bars run a caramel fault line through German chocolate cake: half the cake-mix crust bakes first, then gets layered with chocolate chips, walnuts and caramel melted with sweetened condensed milk before the rest crumbles on top. They come out fudgy at the center, chewy at the edges, and cut into twenty squares in 40 minutes — bake-sale currency of the highest denomination.

Ingredients

1
individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped
13
cup sweetened condensed milk
1
German chocolate cake mix
34
cup butter, melted
12
cup sweetened condensed milk
1
cup semisweet chocolate chips
1
cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x13-inch baking dish.
2. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the individually wrapped caramels with 1/3 cup of sweetened condensed milk in the microwave, stirring every 30 seconds until smooth. Set aside.
3. In a large bowl, combine the German chocolate cake mix, melted butter, and 1/2 cup of sweetened condensed milk. Stir the mixture thoroughly. Spread half of the cake mix mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
4. Bake in the preheated oven for 6 to 8 minutes.
5. Remove the baking dish from the oven and generously cover the partially baked mixture with the melted caramel, semisweet chocolate chips, and chopped walnuts. Spread the remaining cake mix mixture on top. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
