Chef's Spicy Orange BBQ Sauce
A zesty and flavorful BBQ sauce with a hint of sweetness and heat.
Ingredients
1 | (16 ounce) bottle Heinz ketchup |

1⁄8 | cup honey |
1⁄8 | cup brown sugar |
1⁄8 | cup butter |
3⁄4 | cup Worcestershire sauce (start with 1/4 cup. Add rest gradually stop when you reach your desired taste.) |

1⁄4 | cup diced onion |
2 | whole bay leaves |
1 | teaspoon oregano |
1 | teaspoon basil |
1 | teaspoon garlic (minced) |
1 | teaspoon ground mustard |
1 | tablespoon salt |
1 | tablespoon coarse black pepper |
1 | tablespoon dried red chili pepper |
3 | dashes louisiana hot sauce |
Instructions
1. | In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine Heinz ketchup, honey, brown sugar, and butter. Simmer gently. |

2. | Stir constantly until the butter is completely melted. Avoid boiling the mixture. |
3. | Add Worcestershire sauce, orange zest, diced onion, bay leaves, oregano, basil, minced garlic, ground mustard, salt, black pepper, dried red chili pepper, and Louisiana hot sauce. Let it simmer for 10 minutes and adjust seasoning to taste. |
4. | Gradually adjust the seasoning to reach the desired flavor. For a spicier sauce, add more black pepper or red chili pepper. For a sweeter sauce, increase the amount of honey. |
5. | Caution: When adding seasoning, do not exceed 1/8 teaspoons at a time. Allow the sauce to simmer for at least five minutes after each addition to enhance the flavors. |
6. | To prevent burning, avoid boiling the sauce. Stir constantly while cooking. |
