This apple crisp uses tender fresh apples under a buttery oat streusel, baked until the fruit bubbles and the topping turns crisp. It moves the former microwave shortcut closer to the classic dessert while keeping the recipe simple enough for a weeknight.

Instructions

1. Heat the oven to 350°F and butter a 9 by 13 inch baking dish.
2. Combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, lemon juice, flour, cinnamon, and salt in a large bowl until the apples are evenly coated.
3. Spread the apple mixture in an even layer in the prepared baking dish.
4. Stir the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt together in a separate bowl.
5. Work the cold butter into the oat mixture with your fingertips or a pastry cutter until the topping forms moist crumbs with some pea-size pieces.
6. Fold the chopped walnuts into the topping.
7. Scatter the topping evenly over the apples without pressing it down.
8. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, until the apples are tender, the juices bubble around the edges, and the topping is golden brown.
9. Let the crisp rest for at least 15 minutes before serving.
10. Serve warm with whipped cream, if desired.
