This sweet potato casserole is the familiar holiday side dish with a smooth, buttery sweet potato filling and a toasted marshmallow topping. The potatoes are cooked until tender, mashed with brown sugar, warm spices, milk, butter, and eggs, then baked until set before the marshmallows go on.

| 1. | Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and butter a 9x13-inch baking dish. |

| 2. | Place the sweet potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water, and bring to a boil. |
| 3. | Simmer the sweet potatoes until very tender when pierced with a fork, 15 to 20 minutes. |
| 4. | Drain the sweet potatoes well and return them to the warm pot for 1 minute to steam off excess moisture. |
| 5. | Mash the sweet potatoes until mostly smooth. |
| 6. | Stir in the brown sugar, milk, melted butter, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until evenly combined. |
| 7. | Spread the sweet potato mixture in the prepared baking dish. |
| 8. | Bake until the filling is hot and lightly set around the edges, 25 to 30 minutes. |
| 9. | Scatter the marshmallows evenly over the top. |
| 10. | Return the casserole to the oven and bake until the marshmallows are puffed and golden, 5 to 8 minutes. |
| 11. | Let the casserole stand for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. |
