1 cup all-purpose flour
¾ cup sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
2 teaspoons baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
½ cup milk
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup chopped nuts, if desired
1 cup packed brown sugar
¼ cup cocoa powder
1 ¾ very hot water
ice cream for serving

  • Preparation

    1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
    2. In an ungreased 9x9x2 inch square pan, mix together the flour, granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons of cocoa, baking powder, and salt.
    3. Add milk, oil, and vanilla to the dry ingredients, and mix with a fork until smooth.
    4. Stir in the chopped nuts, if desired.
    5. Evenly spread the batter in the pan.
    6. Sprinkle the packed brown sugar and 1/4 cup of cocoa over the batter.
    7. Carefully pour the very hot water evenly over the batter.
    8. Bake for about 40 minutes or until the top is dry.
    9. Allow the cake to cool for 10 minutes.
    10. Serve by spooning the cake into dessert dishes and topping each serving with a scoop of ice cream.
