1 | 9-inch baked pie shell |
2 | strawberries, stems removed and halved |
1 | cup heavy cream |

Preparation of Custard Filling:
- Combine sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a medium saucepan. Gradually add scalded milk and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thick.
- Temper the beaten eggs by adding a small amount of the hot mixture to them, then quickly whisk together.
- Return the egg mixture to the saucepan and continue cooking, stirring constantly until thick.
- Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in butter and vanilla extract.
- Cover the custard mixture and chill in the refrigerator.

Assembly of the Pie:
- Whip the cream, then add sugar and beat until thickened.
- Pour the chilled custard mixture into the bottom of the baked pie shell and arrange the halved strawberries over the top.
- Just before serving, generously spread the whipped cream over the top of the strawberries.
- Garnish with additional berries if desired.
