Image for recipe: German Beef and Cabbage Rolls

Ingredients: 9

This recipe is a wholesome adaptation of the classic German krautburger, featuring a delicious combination of lean ground beef, cabbage, and cheese, all enveloped by soft bread dough. These rolls freeze excellently and are delightful when accompanied with a side of mustard.

Ingredients

1 pound lean ground beef
1 onion, chopped
½ medium head cabbage, shredded
½ (1 ounce) package dry onion soup mix
1 (8 ounce) package mild Cheddar cheese, sliced
black pepper to taste
2 (1 pound) loaves frozen bread dough, thawed
butter flavored cooking spray
¼ cup margarine, melted

Instructions

    1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
    2. In a large, deep skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat. Once browned, drain the excess fat. Add the shredded cabbage and dry onion soup mix. Cook for an additional 5 minutes or until lightly browned. Set the mixture aside.
    3. Roll out one loaf of bread dough into a 16x8 inch rectangle, then cut it into eight 4-inch squares. Spoon the cabbage and beef mixture into the center of each square. Top with a small slice of Cheddar cheese. Bring the diagonal points of the dough together, pinching the edges closed. Place the krautburgers on a baking sheet coated with butter-flavored cooking spray and allow them to rise for about 10 minutes.
    4. Bake the rolls for 20 minutes or until they turn golden brown. Brush the warm rolls with melted margarine. Repeat the same process with the second loaf of bread dough using the remaining cabbage mixture and cheese.
