Ingredients

4 large eggs, separated
3/4 cup butter, at room temperature
2 cups granulated sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 12 teaspoons baking powder
12 teaspoon baking soda
14 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk
frosting

Instructions

    1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Prepare a 9- by 13-inch pan by greasing it and dusting it with flour.
    2. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the egg whites until stiff but not dry. Set aside.
    3. In a separate mixing bowl, cream the room temperature butter for 1 to 2 minutes; add the granulated sugar and cream for another 2 minutes.
    4. Add the egg yolks all at once and beat for another minute or until the mixture appears light and fluffy. Beat in the vanilla extract.
    5. Measure the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt, carefully leveling each with a knife, and then stir them into the flour.
    6. Measure the buttermilk in a liquid measuring cup.
    7. Add a portion of the flour mixture to the butter-sugar mixture and mix well. Alternate with the buttermilk and remaining flour in stages, mixing gently after each addition.
    8. Fold the stiff egg whites into the batter with a rubber spatula. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
    9. Bake for 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let it cool on a rack.
    10. Ice the cooled cake with your preferred frosting. Prepare decorators' frosting, divide it into bowls, mix in food coloring, and pipe decorations using pastry bags with different tips.
    11. Create a rainy day scene with clouds, raindrops, grass, and a figure holding an umbrella. Wash the tip when switching colors. Use star and leaf tips for flowers, and pipe a border around the scene if desired.
