This traditional Slovak dish, Haluski, is a comforting meal made with egg noodles, cabbage, and butter. It is a popular choice during Lent and pairs perfectly with fish.

Ingredients

1
package (16 ounce) egg noodles
12
cup butter
1
yellow onion, chopped
1
head large head cabbage, shredded
salt and ground black pepper to taste
black pepper

Instructions

1. Begin by bringing a large pot of lightly salted water to a gentle boil. Add the egg noodles and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are cooked through yet still slightly firm to the bite, approximately 5 minutes. Drain the noodles.
2. In a skillet, melt the butter over low heat. Cook and stir the chopped onion until softened and the butter turns a golden brown color, typically 5 to 10 minutes. Add the shredded cabbage and mix well to coat. Cover the skillet with a lid and allow the cabbage to cook, stirring occasionally, until it is tender, usually about 30 minutes. Season the cabbage with salt and pepper. Remove the lid and continue cooking until the cabbage caramelizes slightly, which usually takes an additional 5 to 10 minutes.
3. Combine the cooked noodles and cabbage in a serving bowl, mixing them together thoroughly. Season with additional salt and pepper to taste.
