3 diced bacon
1 chopped onion
1 peeled and chopped apple
1 chopped red cabbage
1 cup water
1 4 cup white wine vinegar
1 tablespoon sugar
1 2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Braising the Red Cabbage

    1. In a Dutch oven, cook the diced bacon over medium heat until crisp.
    2. Using a slotted spoon, remove the bacon and place it on a paper towel to drain.
    3. In the bacon drippings, sauté the chopped onion and peeled, chopped apple until tender.
    4. Stir in the chopped red cabbage, water, white wine vinegar, sugar, and salt.
    5. Bring the mixture to a boil.
    6. Reduce the heat, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 30 minutes or until the cabbage is tender.
