1 | cup buttermilk |

1 | teaspoon ground allspice |
1⁄2 | teaspoon ground nutmeg |
Instructions

For the batter
- Cream the shortening, gradually adding sugar and beating until light and fluffy.
- Stir in the molasses, then add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Dissolve the baking soda in the buttermilk.
- Combine the all-purpose flour and spices; add to the creamed mixture alternately with the buttermilk, beating well after each addition.
- Cover and store the batter in the refrigerator until ready to bake. The batter can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.
- To bake, spoon the batter into greased muffin pans, filling them 2/3 full.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.
