Ingredients
1 | lb sage breakfast sausage |
---|---|
3 | medium red potatoes, thinly sliced |
6 | slices white bread (it is best with a fresh, dense bread like Pepperidge Farm) |
1 | cup Cheese Whiz (or other nacho cheese sauce) |
4 | eggs |
1 1⁄2 | cups milk |
2 | teaspoons dry ground mustard |
salt | |
pepper | |
maple syrup |
Instructions
1. | Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). |
---|---|
2. | In a skillet over medium-high heat, cook the sage breakfast sausage until browned. |
3. | Meanwhile, grease an 8-by-10-inch baking dish and evenly distribute the slices of white bread along the bottom. |
4. | Using a spatula, remove the cooked sausage from the skillet and evenly layer it over the bread in the baking dish. Do not drain the fat from the skillet. |
5. | Add the thinly sliced red potatoes to the remaining fat in the skillet. Cook, turning occasionally, until lightly browned. Add the browned potatoes to the baking dish, evenly layering them over the sausage. |
6. | Evenly spread the Cheese Whiz (or other nacho cheese sauce) over the top of the potatoes. |
7. | In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and ground mustard. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Pour this mixture over the casserole in the baking dish. |
8. | Bake the casserole at 350°F (180°C) for 50 minutes, or until the center is set and puffy. |
9. | Allow the casserole to cool slightly before cutting. Serve with a drizzle of maple syrup. |
