   A traditional and comforting side dish that pairs well with any main course.
| 1 | kg potatoes, peeled |

| 50 | g butter | 
| 3⁄4 | cup cream (you can use a combination of both) or ¾ milk (you can use a combination of both) | 
| • | salt | 
| • | white pepper, to taste | 
| 1. | Begin by peeling the potatoes and cutting them into evenly sized pieces. |

| 2. | Place the potatoes in a saucepan of boiling water and cook until they are tender. | 
| 3. | Once the potatoes are cooked, drain them and return them to the saucepan. | 
| 4. | Using a potato masher or ricer, mash the potatoes to your desired consistency. For a smoother mash, continue mashing until no lumps remain. | 
| 5. | Add the butter to the mashed potatoes and continue mashing until the butter is fully melted. Pour in the cream and/or milk gradually while mashing until a smooth texture is achieved. Adjust the amount of liquid based on your preference for creaminess. | 
| 6. | Season the mashed potatoes with salt and white pepper to taste. | 
| 7. | Experiment with different types of potatoes such as sweet potatoes (kumara) to create unique variations of mashed potatoes. |
